I have picked up an '82 430xc that the kicker would not return to the upright position...pulled the cover and discovered that the spring was off, not connected. All the parts are there (spring/pawl) so I thought I would re-install and time it per the Huskydoggg video. The problem is that the kick shaft is 2 pieces and there appears to be no way to hold the shaft while rotating the cover like in the video.....can I upgrade to a 1 piece from a later model? ('87) Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks,
    w

hold the kick start shaft tang in the vise then. same orientation as in Steves video but just insert into vice more and grab the piece the pawl goes into but leav enough out of way of vise contact area so you can still turn and insert pawl

None off mine are like that, might be the 1rst design 81 and early 82.

A vise or a 3rd hand ;) cover held by the stomach with the shaft in the vise holding back spring tension and then on with the kicker.
    A bit tricky

I have seen the two piece shaft on two bikes. Was mystefied with first encounter and thought it was some PO fix, till the second example came around and then concluded it must have been original husky. Both bikes were 83 and still using the earlier clutch ring gear, idler and kicker gears.

cruise....did the way I suggested work for you. That's the way I do 2 piecers. or with another person and 4 hand the whole process in a twisted ballet of hands

I was able to use the vice to grab the larger diameter of the shaft and follow Huskydoggg's procedure....worked like a champ!
    Thanks for the help
