Just stripped a pair of 83 cr500 forks and was suprised to find a spring in front of the top out washer, Anybody have any idea what this mod may do and also if the drillings in the rod are stock, would appreciate any ideas on this Thanks

It's stock, called a negative spring so the forks don't do a metal to metal top out. Holes are stock. Later George

The 87-88 top out spring is longer. The spring in the photo looks kind of like the homemade one's I tried before i went to the 87-88 forks.
