Technically illegal. Practically, not likely a problem. That said, until very recently there was a site dedicated to scans of bike tests from the '70s-'80s. He was forced to take it down by copyright holders.

That's a bummer, no wonder I can't find that site anymore. Had tons of great stuff, I think it was called Ye Old Speed shop or something along those lines.

There are some posts here somewhere in the Vintage section as the guy signed up as a member to let us know about his site.

I think a good bit of it is legal if you quote the source. Probably depends on who owns it as well.

    What an interesting question.
If copyright applies and the writer is the owner of the material then what happens if you follow instructions in a "how to" and they turn out to be wrong , causing damage , injury or death ?
    Just a thought.

I buy bike mags and lend them to mates to read , am I breaking the law ?
What's the difference between physically lending them and electronically lending.
What if I buy a mag and give it as a present to a friend.

    Cheers

I've often read good articles in the Aussie mags and wanted to scan and post here. I don't do it mainly because these mags are still selling in the newsagent. I'd be like buying new music and uploading for free download.
That being said, i would have no problem posting a 20 year old article from a mag that's no longer available for sale.

Yes its like a song i guess, if a radio station plays it they have got to pay the artist, over here its called the Performing Rights Society.
The way i look at it is i paid my money for the magazine all those years ago ...cant i do what i want?
My profession is a refrigeration installer and if i put a freezer room in a butchers shop i sure as hell dont get any more money when that shop gets sold to another butcher! Of course i could post under an assumed name but dont wont the legal people hassling CafeHusky!

The tech section has a couple articles posted. Page 3 I think under the "Vintage Race Mods /Tech Tips and Media" thread.

I believe since it would be used strictly for non-profit, and using the assumption that the article is no longer in print, that it would not raise any eyebrows. Since copyright in each country varies, and this site is hosted in the USA, the US's copyright laws do apply. And the works after 1923 are more or less protected for a long time yet, so yeah, could be illegal if it wasn't considered fair use by the owner's lawyers.

The same would apply to the service manuals...brochures...etc.
