I really can't believe this happened. I also heard it was a trap but how would that happen? Isn't it wide open to where you want kind of race? His career so far was amazing not to mention everything else he had coming up. I've heard he's an all around great person. While the whole sport is mourning the loss of such a talented rider I can't help but think of his friends and family.

Super nice guy. A few friends of mine pitted for him last year at B1K and he was such a joy to work with. He even chased a guy down that was trying to steal my friend's backpack. He didn't have to do that, but it was the right thing to do. We used to see him at all the enduros years ago.
Truly one of the good guys, not to mention America's future at Dakar.

    I'm pretty sad tonight...

not only sad but unsettling....individual(s) responsible for this should be executed only after family members were able to have a closed door session with these people for 5 minutes...

    Damn, not good at all.
Didn't know him, but knew about him. Seemed like the epitome of a real down to earth professional with some amazing talent.

My heart skipped a beat at the first blush of the headline; unbelievable.

    Kurt...RIP.

Booby trap would be probably something like this - however new reports say it was not one:

"Booby traps" in the baja context don't mean what it means in a normal context, usually. Usually it's just a jump or a whoop or a pit or something else on the course. They are not put there to hurt people, but locals don't necessarily understand what is and isn't safe for riders.

This is a real, real shame. KC was my favorite offroad guy, and this is just a terrible tragedy.

This is racing at its cruelest moment, us fans of racing are never really ready for this even though it's close to us. Sadly Kurt joins the greats on this list, Woods, Senna, Earnhardt, Meoni, Sainct, Symons, Lalay, Cavandoli, Jefferies, and of course Hamel. This list is longer still of course but these are who immediately come to my mind.PS the booby trap thing is not a substantiated fact its just internet chatter, a bunch of others went through the same spot, with no issues, dont let blame cloud the mind without factual data.

Same AH's that shot my High School Classmate, Steve Martz.

Steve was racing in the Baja some years back and was shot.

    Superhero is right....

If anything, we should all aspire to be as good as KC - at whatever it is we do.

I propose a ride day in Lucerne in his honor.

    Anyone??????

ahhh I was under impression that "booby trap" would be what one could come across when riding on unauthorized land...i.e. piano wire between trees etc...was quick to jump gun anticipating the worst from humanity...Regardless...a real shame...a loss of talent in a dangerous sport with risks is always hard to swallow. RIP Kurt and condolences to family and friends.
