• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

knee braces??

On my way to Moab we stopped at the st anthony sand dunes... had a hard crash and ended up fracturing my knee and tearing my MCL and most likely ACL and Patellar tendon. Ill know monday on the last two. I was wearing fox knee pads. Im looking at buying some actual knee braces. something like evs or asterisk or maybe the new pods. What has been your experience with braces? Have you had an injury while wearing them? Do you think you are more likely to break you femur or tib/fib while wearing them? Any other experiences or tips?

Well I have direct experience with this subject(unfortunately). First off, I am sorry to hear about your accident and I hope you have a speedy recovery. Last May I had a "off" while riding some trails up near the UP of Michigan that ruptured my right Quad tendon. At the time I had no idea how serious the injury really was. I really hope your patella tendon isn't ruptured because if it is you are looking at a 12-18 month recovery time after surgery. If you only tore it you got lucky and may only need 6 months for it to heal properly. Of all the injuries you listed above, IMHO, the patella tendon is by fay the most troubling. OK, now that I blathered on about that, on to the braces. My DR was good enough to write a prescription for custom bi-lateral ACL braces and somehow my insurance approved them. It has been 14 months since my last surgery and I wear the braces every time I ride off road now. I have Donjoy customs, similar to what NFL players wear and I use the MX impact guard with them. It gives great support and impact protection. I would recommend asking your DR/Surgeon to write a prescription for some good braces before you settle on off the shelf braces. I would rather break a bone than to damage soft tissue. Bones heal easier in most cases and you are back riding in 8-10 weeks but soft tissue damage is usually several months and will never be the same again. Just my thoughts. Good luck:thumbsup:

Sorry to hear about your Knee - I had the ACL surgery with the center section of the patella tendon used for the new ACL. I think some doctors use the hamstring or a cadaver. I would use my own body parts if you have the choice. Rehab was about 6 months. All I can say is follow the protocol they give you and you should be fine.
I was fitted with an innovation sports carbon brace which I still use. Never has a problem ,although my brother had a stick jammed into his knee brace and through his calf muscle (nasty). But that was a freak accident. Good luck and heal fast!

here is what they took out of my knee 90 min after I crashed. Dr said that much blood is usually tears or ruptures of several tendons. I hate to say my patellar tendon hurts the worst. I also am hoping I can get a dr to write me a script for a brace and get insurance to approve it. Thanks alot for the kind works and sharing your experience.

thanks! I cant believe that about the stick...that sounds really painful.

I wear the Asterisk cell after I had a knee operation. It has a strap you can attach to your boot (if you do not mind putting a hole in the boot) that helps the entire leg turn with the foot. Very comfortable and solid. I would honestly say it has saved me from a couple knee situations. Not cheap, but I have had mine since 2005, so average over time cost is not bad at all and still going.

Sorry to hear about your injury. I did a short writeup on the pod knee braces a few months ago. It should be pretty easy to search for. In short I highly recommend them. If you can afford a set of custom Don Joy's get them as they are another step higher, but for off the shelf braces you will have a hard time beating the pod's. I had ACL reconstruction surgery in April and wore the pods for about 3 months straight after. They fit well and are comfortable and above all I feel safer wearing them. I never give the idea of a knee brace breaking my leg in a crash much serious thought. The way I look at it I compare it to this. Would you not wear your seat belt just because there is a 1 in 1000 chance you could crash into a lake and it could trap you underwater? The same with knee braces. They probably prevent 1000 knee injuries to every leg they break. Just youtube Villopoto crash Seattle 2012 to see how easy it is to tear up a knee. He didn't even really crash.

Protective gear is all the same. Spend the money for the good stuff and your body will thank you when you are older.

How do you guys feel the braces you wear would protect a direct fall on the knee cap. Thats how I crashed and I must have twisted my knee when I rolled.

Man you sound like me last year. Your questions are exactly the ones I asked and your fear of the knee cap(patella) impact too. The Donjoy impact guard works very well for protecting the patella as do the Pods and other knee braces. The guards float above the patella. I can't say it would 100% save your patella but it sure will help.

I saw some donjoy braces online today, looks nice...expensive compared to the others..sound like a step above tho

Mine are CTi with patella cup.
Doc wrote the note but insurance said 'no' so they were pricey.
They are the difference between riding and not riding so worth it.
FWIW, my knees were damaged on skis, not on the bike.

Rader: I was wearing a pair of Fox guards similar to that. They worked great up until this injury.
Fasteer: what was Injured In your knee if you don't mind me asking?

Sorry about your injury.

I've used CTi custom fit braces over the years and would never use an off the shelf brace. You joint does not have to flex very far in the wrong direction for it to cause an injury. So a custom, very close fit is very important IMO.

As far as cost, consider this, IF your insurance will cover it, your out of pocket will likely be less then (or close to) the cost of a decent off the shelf brace.

My CTi looks like this one, except I have a knee cap protector accessory on mine. It is awesome. I think it has a better design with a firmer fit then the Don Joy's.

Looks like they call it their "Motocross kit", the knee cap protector.

It also included a sleeve, or sock like thing you wear under the brace. This enhances the comfort factor greatly. I never wear my brace with out it.

Lastly, and I think any surgeon would agree, physical therapy and strengthening your leg and joint is the single most important thing you can do to prevent injury again.

Seems like alot of people like the CTi. Im going to try and get a prescription for one. If not ill have to get a plan b. This knee has been operated on twice. Once was just a scope and once was to put a rod in my tibia so maybe the knee was weaker to begin with. Had an MRI today and I guess I learn on monday the total damages. A friend of mine is a physical therapist so maybe ill ask him for some strength excercises for my knee once I get it in working order again. Thanks everyone for the replies so far and if you have an experience with a knee brace please share!

+1 to the Physical Therapy! I worked hard for over a year to over come the atrophy in my right leg and 14 months after my last surgery I have most of the muscle mass back. It takes hard work and dedication to come back fully from something like this. Best of luck on your path to recovery and we are here pulling for you:thumbsup:

Right knee torn MCL.
Left knee is undiagnosed but often feels worse than the right one.
As my grandmother used to say
"Gettin old ain't for sissies"

I'll also agree that physio & exercise makes all the difference.
If I can get a couple runs or dirtbike rides every week, my knees and back are much happier.

Well got the verdict today...shattered the top of my tibia and stretched my MCL with a slight tear. No surgery at this point since its not displaced. No idea if braces would have helped or not.

Glad it wasn't worse but it still sounds serious. Good luck on your recovery. The Tibia fracture will take some time to heal and I am sure your meniscus will be tender for some till as well. Take care:)
