• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Horsepower @ rear wheel for 1983 500 models comps

Husqvarna
AA Class
To support a couple other threads here are a few readings
from test for the record

per Cycle guide May 83 dyno tests

Husky 500cr rear wheel Hp is 46Hp @ 6500 rpm
Compare to

Maico 83 490 is 43.8 @ 7500 rpm

Honda 480 is 43.8 @ 7500 rpm

KTM 495 is 41.7 @ 7500 rpm

KAW. 500 is 48.8 @ 6500 rpm

Suzuki 500 41.3 @ 7500 rpm

Yamaha 490 44.7 @ 8500 rpm

Shocking a lot of these bikes have a 10hp jump in about 1000 rpm. including the Husky

82 500 dyne test shows a better power band figure or range of horsepower for the 500
42.99 to 46.3 for 6000 to 7500 rpm Thats much better graph and for the rider.

This is the Cycle mag test

The Maico has a range like this also.

Looking for a Dyno test for the 430 right now in all the old magazines.

Remember the 1981 Motocross action mag test has the Husky 430cr the best all around open bike. Not the Maico 490

Let's say the husky 500cc is 46 rear wheel hp. Me estimate is were about 60hp @ crankshaft?
So the cycle world special edition magazine on Husqvarna isn't far off when the cr390 was rated at 43hp at the rear wheel.

I remember reading somewhere that an all original (stock) 83 500 was run/timed through the quarter mile down in Australia and ran something like 11.30 seconds. If that is true and you figure about 400 pounds weight for the bike and rider that would equal out to 54 H/P as per my Barry Grant fuel systems calculator. Does anyone have any recent quarter mile times on the 500? I know it is not on the dirt but the quarter mile is a great dyno!

I did quite a few rear wheel dyno runs with aircooled 500 Huskys
A good stock 84 WR500 runs 46hp @ 6300rpm.
Blueprinting got it to 53hp @ 6500. Tractive force exceeded Bombardier DS650 race quads tested on same dyno. After these runs the engine assembly pressure test was done and the viton crank-seals were not even holding 5psi.
There is a lot in these Husky engines to be extracted once the power loss areas are sorted.
Development continues and there is also a nasty 500 liquid cooler coming up..

Yes very interesting. I put a new seal in another rebuild - still viton but failed right away. Replaced right away or really had too.

Was seal hot when checking Psi in cylinder. What were you getting on PSI If you know off hand.

For guys here Halls has the better internal main crank seal. Has more metal like a internal hard shell to hold pressure.

Been looking for other makers for even better seal. No luck so far. Thank you - great info

Oh - looking at or with a guy who has two stroke software that says can project the horsepower with all factors included.
This is for fun !

These seals should Hold Dang it. Note Looking for big wide torque and nice smooth horsepower powerbands. Oh wait think we already have it in 430 500 but want to know what it is!

and an new KTM/HUSKY 300 makes 54 HP. these old open bikes were all about torque. HP#'s are for bar stool racing. LOL
