Just got a Golden Tyre front (GT216AA) in form the good people at ZipTy Racing to try. Have not mounted it yet. Some observations... - Seems stiff compound - Say AA Competition on the side so I'm not worthy :>) - Also says FIM on the side but the knobs seem tall - Says DOT on the side - Is a 2 ply nylon tire - Is huge and wide 90-100-21 - Looks like a supersized Pirelli Scorpion Not sure what it is getting mounted on, good chance it will be my YZ450F. Will report back. Heard nothing but rave reviews so far so looking forward to it.
I picked one up before my rally trip. Mounted up easy peasy and has been very good from everything from all rock to talcom powder sand. It was especially good on the sandy gravel mix forest roads I encountered. I put 1120 miles on it last week with little sign of wear. I ran the pressure at 12 psi. No wobble on pavement either. Overall a very very good tire and I can see why ZipTy raves about them. I ran a 130/90-18 Motoz X circuit rear and the combo was very good. The Motoz didn't wear as good as I'd hoped though. I plan to order 2 more of the Goldentyre fronts ASAP since I haven't found a better front tire to date. My 2 cents worth
Should put it on your 511, but they last so long, you can dismount and remount else where, no problem. Still on my original fat tire too.
Chilly is also reviewing this tire over at Enduro360.com. You can see it in the middle of the image below, it is a huge front tire, definitely not your run of the mill 90/100, more like a 100/110! http://www.enduro360.com/2014/08/12/products-tested/dunlop-at81-front-tire-review/
you guys are living in fat city, go fat or go home, that's alot of fat out front, kind of like walking into a party with your beer gut hanging out from under your wife beater tee...........Ok got all that outta my system. Let's hear about the tire. PS a few of my crew are using the AT81RC tires as in the E360 comparo, but with the RC reinforced carcass (read HD) and seem to like them as an all around tire, 2 are using Tubliss with super low press and the RC seems to need almost zero pressure and still maintains its shape ( Im not a subscriber but the guys that are on them are solid 40A class riders- note both are on lightweights-YZ144 and 150XC), our terrain is exactly where Chilly mentioned, McC V hi dez zone for the most part.
As far as the E360 baja rally application goes the GT216 fatty will be a big fat hit with Chile Blanco.
I'm all over one of these as soon as I have my pennies collected for a goody run to Zip Ty. My wishlist has lots of things on it, but this tire is top of the list.
What's the hot ticket for the SW dez these days? When I was still living in socal it seemed everyone and their brother ran Maxxis IT's. I'm going to Baja in a few months and dont have a clue what to run.
On a TE 630 that gets ridden on the blacktop and two track dirt roads, would the fat tire be overkill compared to the IRC TR8 on it now? (I have been following the 411 and have a Kenda K270 waiting to go on the rear.)
what Tinken said......that is/was the V2R combo they ran I'm sure. Ty knows a little bit about what type tires to run in open long distance "Dez" comp. Any questions about ZipTy qualifications for long distance tire choice? Check Ty's B1K and other Dez long distance races resume'. Tinken, post up the speed averages, Im anxious to see how fast that hot rod 501 ran!!!
Long story short: This thing is amazing. I am blown away by how well it performed in the test. I put 6 other tires up against it, two days of testing. Nothing really came close to matching it. This is not a result that I expected, I really thought some of my other tires, like the Washougal 90/100, would give it a run.
I am still loving mine. My FE501 is very compliant with this tire and around 12 pounds with a tube. I'd like to try a tubliss to see if I could lower the pressures without fear of a pinch flat.
We ran the whole V2R on one set of tires, Golden Tyres front and rear. But that's 500 miles and not 1000. And though Ty and I do not always share the same opinion, for Baja, the 908RR is the tire of choice.
Thanks again Chilly for taking the time to test one of our products. Also, I read your recent article posted to Enduro360 and as always enjoyed the read. http://www.enduro360.com/2014/08/14/blog/testing-such-a-simple-plan/
