Hi, does the front disc brake on an 85/86 CR work better than the dual leading shoe front brake on an 83 CR? If so by how much? I noticed the 85/86 caliper is a single piston and in 87 they went to a double piston.

DLS front brake is way better then 1st year single piston Brembo. 2nd gen dual piston caliper is also better than single piston Brembo.

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. So basically the single piston caliper is not worth upgrading to.

correct, as long as you have the dls set up and adjusted well. the dual piston 87-88 setup is excellent and comparable in performance to a modern bike but the small rotor holds it back.
