So I'm upgrading my little 3 rail motorcycle trailer to a new 7X16 enclosed trailer and it's a completely blank canvas. I'm looking for advice, pictures etc...of your current set up for the inside to hold the bikes in place. It has 4 hooks in the floor one at each corner inside that's it. Not sure whIch way to go, attaching to sides or floor, just adding more hooks in floor with front tire hoops? I would like to be able to remove bike stuff to use trailer for other things too. Something quick and easy loading and unloading. Thanks in advance
I have a 7x16 Trailer that I bought used that replaced my old 6x10 . The 7x16 is a little taller which is great for me compared to the old old , no more hitting my head on the ceiling inside . I built a bench up front 30” deep for storage and a spot for the tool box . Even with the bench I have transported 5 bikes in it . 2x1x2 and sure I could do 6 as 3x3 . I also had 4 across at one time , slight angle . I think you might be better with mounting recessed anchors to the floor as the floor is at least 3/4 plywood and the walls are much less . I have also used it to move my daughters a few times without issues . I can send you some pictures after I get home tonight . It is a bit of a mess right now as i’m Starting to load it for an upcoming trip up north . One thing I would NOT recommend is a linoleum floor , can be very slick when wet like oiled ice .
Sounds great for pics. I'll need something for front wheel to sit in was thinking the wheel hoops but I would like them removeable so I still have a flat floor. There's a rail set up that runs front to back all the way down the floor instead of random recessed anchors in the floor. Are you using wheel hoops or just putting the front tire against the wall. Btw I have street bikes too to haul so just not sure which way to go. Thx again
Doing it both ways , lots of bike not using wheel chocks (which are removable ) but tires up against cabinets with a piece of carpeting in between . 3 bikes , 2 use the wheel chock and 3rd bike in between facing backwards , and have rear wheel strapped so it doesn’t pull backwards . I’ll post some pics after work when I get home . Seems like i’m Always hauling more than my 2 bikes back and forth to my buddy’s in Vt along with parts so I like the fact that all is out of sight and lock up during travel and during any stops I make along the way .
With a bike in “normal spot” plenty of room front and rear of bike . I can get 3 side by side with 1 facing backwards .
Thank you . I should have mentioned that if you leave your tool box on top of the bench during travel , strap it down .
I could do that but sometimes i’m In a rush and may not have all the drawers closed all the way . Because of that I just strap in down and don’t have to worry about the drawers opening during travels and if I have to remove the tool box for some unknown reason it’s quick other than the weight.
Her’s a couple of pics with the bike all the way forward and there’s still enough room for a 2nd row in the back . I believe I have enough tongue weight so when I load the bikes I try to distribute the bike weight over the axles . Maybe i’ve Been lucky but the trailer has been very stable , no sway that I can feel .
My floor is painted with a paint for garage floors with some grit mixed in to make it non skid . Had a linoleum floor in my old trailer but found it very slick with wet riding boots on , don’t want to get hurt again because of that .
This is what I use, doesn’t compress forks, just use straps to keep from moving. 45degree alignment has its advantages also. PS, not my trailer BTW
This is exactly what I do. I get five big bikes inside my 6x12 and all my shop stuff that I don't want inside the motorhome. As an alternative to bike shoes, you could screw 2' high 4x4's to the side wall (for chocks) and use tie-downs, then you wouldn't have to remove anything for (nearly) full floor cargo hauling duties.
Great ideas, street I've never seen those front tire hoops before. CT I like the removable ones that slip in the holders in the floor and just pull out when not in use. Looks like more floor tie downs will be a sure thing. Jon 4x4's are a good idea too but I do like the idea on not compressing the forks. Keep em coming I don't get the trailer for a couple weeks
The “rail” down the middle that you mentioned , does it look like a strip of metal with slots across it maybe every inch or 2 ? As far as the placement of the tie down mounts , try to keep them as far apart from the tire but also equal distance either side of the tire . Farther apart they are the less you need to compress the forks . I have another friend who built a pair of folding bunk beds inside for camping at the track . He also wired some ac outlets for use with a small generator . ( he loves his am coffee ).
