• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Dumb question on repacking a muffler

Grump

Ok, In my whole life I never had a bike that required an exhaust can be repacked, or if I did I didn't realize it, so never had to do one. I am an ex-mechanic so that is not the issue. I am curious if any after market exhausts are made for the TE610 that offer the same performance but use design/baffles instead of mineral wool/fiberglass packing? Also, how often as far as "in general" does one need repacking? And are most of them riveted and require the high dollar air rivet gun? Just asking as I make my choices for the power up mod in the future.
Thanks,
Grump

Regarding the rivets, no need for a high dollar air rivet gun, good 'ol double-handed manual ones work just fine, especially with aluminum rivets.

In general, the packing needs to be replaced when the exhaust note 'sounds' different, namely sharper.

Each time I've repacked my muffler (twice) I've noticed it's not only quieter but it also restores the low end grunt/torque. Drill the rivets out and do it.

I can't speak to the aftermarket 610 exhausts.

Ok. I must have read something about some extra large stainless steel rivets somewhere. But I am still curious if an exhaust can is manufactured without the need for the repacking that offers the same performance?
Thanks,
Grump

Well I just posted a simular thread.......all you need is stainless steel pop rivets and gun...and a good quality repacking kit from an exhaust manufacturer....I bought the one from fmf..you get what you pay for..instructions included

As to your question about a can without packing material....probably would be too big and heavy for a dual sport...??

Does Arrow sell a re-pack kit for their power-up exhaust?

source?

Arrow does offer a rivet set and packing but this appears only for 06
this is at there website english version.....

Dunno about a "baffle" type exhaust but I run an Uptite can and it's very easy to service. I put over 2k miles on it before a repack was necessary and there are no rivets to fool with on this silencer, just take out 6 allen bolts and pull the can apart. Then you can re-pack with your favorite material.

I buy my repacking material from Two-Brothers Racing. Good material, enough for two repacks, and comes with rivets. Was ~$20.00

I would replace the rivets with aluminum ones. They're easier to drill out next time.
As far as a baffle slip on, I think the FMF Q cores are baffle type.

So for the stock arrow one on the 08 and the stockie on the 05, just use a gneric repacking kit from local bike shop? I have never done one before, is it obvious how they need to be packed or wrapped? Any one got a link to a guide?

Yeh Pete the local bike shop should have some. Doesnt cost much, but if youre tight you can steal some pink bats from your nearest building site.:p

Pizz easy to do mate.

I believe the Kawi KLX450 has a baffled silencer - no packing. They are really quiet out of the box.

The DRZ 400 has the same type of setup, but is a bit heavier than it needs to be.
So they are out there, just not avail as aftermarket. (that I'm aware of)

Like Grump, I never repacked one either, and doing it won't be a problem, but my "new" TE250/310 now has over 3,000 miles on it and I never did it. When I did the Athena kit at about 2,600 miles It feels stronger than ever (of course) but maybe I could get even more low-end if I repacked it? I have the Arrow power up muffler on, Lambda out, and a PCIII on which I have programmed just right for my setup. I'm guessing I'll have to make a new map after repacking, and from what everyone says, with 3,000 miles on it, I no-doubt need to repack it?

Yes, repack at least annually. I bought a used 2002 XR400r with a BigGun muffler on it recently as an investment...popped the can and in 1ft+ muffler there was less than 2 inches of packing left. The rest had burned out. I repacked with Two-Brother's kit and it sounded like new and seeeemed to hit more torque...may be my imagination :)

I think some bikes are harder on packing than others. My 07 has never been repacked, over 4500 miles on it (7300+ KM). It's still as quiet or quieter as when it was new.
They usually laugh at me when I pull up to sound checks before events. Blew 86db at the last one I was at, this past fall.

Still...be a good idea to pull yours and see where your at. Post some pictures of your findings.

I bought the wrap and a rivet gun. I will pull the can apart tonight...whats the tips...just wrap it around and shove it back or use wire to hold it?

Love to see a pic of a freshly wrapped one about to go back together :)

Didnt see the vid in time...it took 15-20min on the arrow. The original arrow packing wasnt too bad i guess, but i wrecked it pull the can apart. So i added the generic one i bought, but it didint fit quite as go :(

I used teflon plumbing tape, i figured it would melt to nothing eventually.

I think you need the original arrow stuff for the arrow can ???

You should be able to trim the packing to size and some times its better to have four hands rather than two to try and get it back into the can. Mates are handy sometimes.
