My SMR 510 project is coming to a close but I noticed something.

What is the coolant expansion tank (2) for exactly?
Is it just a reservoir, which lets me see the coolant level better and add coolant if necessary?

It's primary purpose is just what you said- it's a tank to retain expanding coolant.

When the coolant temperature drops, it gets sucked back in to the radiator. When cold, the tank should have just a little coolant in it (never empty) but not too much.

For your smr, another function of the tank would be acting as a catch-can. most asphalt tracks don't like liquids on them for safety reason.
