76 CR250. What should the play be on the clutch arm? I only have a newer manual.

The ML frame service manual says 9mm - 13mm. Check out the PDF for reference.

Nothing like a clutch that doesn't work right to ruin an otherwise fun day of riding.

3-5 MM, 13MM is like 1/2 inch way to much.
50 years working on these 3 to 5mm

It had about 12mm and was releasing out too far. I am at 8mm now and it's better.

George is right. When you have a hard time finding neutral this center clutch rod and lever have too much play in it. I set mine tight like George says. I set it at 1/8" play. Just enough space for room to expand when it gets hot and still properly function.

I purchased my second running 83/430wr for $150. The guy had the clutch cover off and clutch apart. He said it needed a clutch. I said nothing. The clutch looked new. The rod and lever needed adjustment.

If your clutch is ever slipping take a minute and revolve the clutch cable from the clutch lever and check for play. If no play the rod needs to be shortened.

Don't forget to adjust the lever on the handle bars so it has 1/16" of play. The cable on the bars shouldn't be tight on the lever.
