  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Camshaft gear removal?

Crono

Husqvarna
A Class
Hi all,

When I took of the cilinder head for inspection and to find the problem of overheating (possible headgeasket) I found out that the bearings on the camshaft at the gear side have some play. So I will replace them.
What is the correct procedure to get the gears of the camshafts? There is no indication in the workshop manual.
Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately I think you have to buy a new cam. I could wrong though.

Well, looks like I get to find out if anyone in Reno can pull one - :censored:

...again.

On one hand the parts manual sells the cam/sprocket/ and bearing as a whole and intact( which is why its not covered in the manual). They don't sell that bearing separately. However it is probably identical to the 2nd bearing on the cam part number 8000 34317 Bearing (ø12xØ28x8 mm). From the recent TT thread it appears this bearing has been replaced by pressing off the sprocket- as it is not a bolt on but a press on. an intake cam is $289.75 and the exhaust is $287.25 from Halls Husky.

Personally- I guess I would look it over once out and attempt to press off the old one and press on a new one and if it seemed good I would run it.

Without a Hydrolic press I would attempt to use one of these pullers: http://www.harborfreight.com/automo...s/bearing-separator-and-puller-set-93980.html

Which works like in this video(although a larger application): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6y7tSPvmf8

Getting it back on: would be more difficult- if I could not figure out how to reverse the puller to use it as press- I'd probably attempt the use of a dead blow hammer and some finesse:D I would put permatex "sleeve retainer" on the sprockets bore before installing it and let sit for 24 hours after pressing on before introducing oil.

After that if I didn't feel confident with the result- I'd then buy the whole new camshaft assembly. Possibly only being out the cost of the bearing which is $11.25 from Halls Husky.

The part numbers I Refferanced are from the 2009 Husky DOHC Parts manual
Not a pro, don't have a machine shop, but that's what I would attempt... Good luck to all:thumbsup:

I guess you found your noise problem!

Ahhhh, we knew that was it. The keeper didn't seperate but the bearing is definitely shot. Tons of play.

Looking at it, the right-side SKF bearing I picked up from Bearing Supply looks so much more finished than the gear-side bearing. The gear side has roughly squared edges, the keeper has machine marks, etc. Of course, Bearing Supply has the good SKF for $5.50 each - hate spending $275 to replace a $5 bearing....

Bills in Salem has a take-off on Ebay - maybe I'll buy a spare and just carry one as back-up

A 2 stroke may be in my future....

I had Eraldo Ferracci (from FBF) replace the bearings on a camshaft a couple of years ago. I think it was 60 to 80 dollars. The cam gears on the 2004s had no markings and needed to be put on correctly. I would give them a try.

HUSKYnXJnWI and rancher1 - thanks for the advice, and the links.

I'm getting a collection of the things, if I get to a half dozen busted intake cams I'll see if Husky USA will trade me for a 2 stroke.

I'm only half kidding about carrying a spare cam - that and a bottle of fork oil and I could ride all day.

Press them off and on all the time. Had to make special tooling for removal as will easily break the cam gear if not carefull. Then special line up tooling press tooling to get it back on and timed properly. Later George

Switched from 2 stroke to '09 310. Just when I started to like the bike, this happens. Tried to remove the sprocket, but it cracked very easy, so I think in order to be able to remove it and change the 5$ bearing, you really need to know what you're doing and have the proper tools.
Really hit my morale as I'm trying to convince myself I did the right thing switching from 2 stroke. If the bike will perform well for the rest of the season, I'll put this episode under bad luck. If not.... I'll be back on 2 stroke in no time. Any words of encouragement?

Sure. I have over 9000 miles on my 09 310 and never touched the engine, other than valve adjustments.

That's a big block redhead (Italian motor, not an xlite).

Motogo1, you should start a thread called "High Mileage 250/310/450/510 Post Your Mileage Here"

No, he said he switched from a 2 stroke to a 09 TE310, unless I missed something. I'll start a thread if I make it through this season and or hit 12,000 without it blowing up. But by then maybe Huskys will be KTMs. Hope not, but man I got my moneys worth out of this bike..:applause:
