Good event for all skilled riders. I might try more hard routes this year since my TE511 is fixed My Son and I cruised this event last year.
Big Bear with the a good MAP is perfect for Adventure Bike's all summer long Last Year most of the easy route consisted of forest service roads and jeeps tails with bouncing in and out of single track sections. A few Rocky Hill Climbs that have Bypass routes. Hard route Riders will enjoy Black Diamond and Double Black Diamond trails I would recommend anyone considering this years ride to email the group if you have concerns since I have no involvement in that club's activities.
I'm REALLY hoping to go on some of these rides now that I have a dual-sport (te310). However, I;m still waiting to get my brand-new bike back from the shop with the starting issues hopefully resolved. One thing I'm seeing is that you're supposed to have your own gps? I saw a thread here from '09 it looked like, there might be newer info out now? Any recommendations on the best set-up for this? I definetely intend to do mostly hard-core trail riding so it would have to be rugged. Maybe this isn't the right thread to post this in....?,
Yes you need a GPS. This year the ride is GPS only(No Roll Charts). The Garmin 76 and 78 seem to be the most popular. Check out this Link http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/big-bear-dual-sport-on-a-zip-ty-husky-310.25934/#post-233412
Thanks for the info! Since these are "organised" rides, do they do any kind of sweep or are you on your own if you have any trouble?
Sweeps- YES and Check points along they way for the hard route riders typically to confirm the finishers plaque riders . & 100+ other riders helping riders spread out along the course
I use Voyager GPS, Works Great for following tracks durring dualsport events. No real Base Map unless you make your own. Setup for hard routes, Extra Heavy Duty Tubes or 6PLY Tires will help keep you rolling Some other GPS opinions. http://www.district37ama.org/forums/showthread.php?t=56768
