  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

FE/FC battery tender cycles fuel pump?

Chums

Husqvarna
Pro Class
Halls were nice enough to install a battery tender cable on their bikes with batteries but when I hook it up and wait a couple minutes my speedo lights up and my fuel pump cycles? Anyone found this or have a fix?

Something is definately amiss...I would check the wiring as it seems there is a circuit being completed that shouldn't be.
What type of tender are you using and is it connected directly to the battery or wired inline somehow?

Can't remember the brand off hand bit its a nice name brand 6/12 trickle charger for small batteries. I've used it on other bikes, sleds,ATVs with no issue. I'll put a call into halls but its hooked direct into the battery terminals with an in line fuse.

Not a trickle charger issue but the way these bikes are wired. I use a battery tender jr on my Duc with an EarthX and on my Audi. No issues. On the Husky, works fine for a few minutes then it's click, click, click.... And with the EarthX when it gets close to topped off it's clicking so fast and cycling the relay it floods the bike! I removed the plug from the battery and will pull the battery if I ever need to charge, since it's a fire hazard... http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/2013-txc310-strange-issue-when-trickle-charging.38128/#post-367413

Talked to halls and the 350 they have does not act funny when plugged in. I'll have to make sure my plug is hooked directly to battery otherwise is could just be the charger.

Just consider if they have really allowed the charger to sit and charge fully as it exhibits the clicking when close to being topped off not when initially starting to charge. Like my initial video posted in the thread above, all seemed just fine until it started clicking soon after I shot that video.

I had the same issue on my 15 FE 350, and was wired straight to batteru just like I have done to any bike or quad I have ever set up. This was the tender image.jpg

Then I replaced with this tender and problem solved, I keep it plugged in 24-7 when bike is setting in shop, and works great and DOESNT cycle fuel pump... image.jpg

Great to know! I have one like the top pic just a different brand, will keep my peelers peeled for one of the little guys then. Thanks!

Never found a reason? Other then thinking it was an amp higher charge rate issue, talked to a local shop and they confirmed it. ? Huh sounded good to me.

I do know that bigger top charger we use at work to charge and maintain a full size battery that we use on trail groomers.

Huskymax... Is your bike a 13 or 14? My thoughts are this is specific to the 13/14 with no ignition key.

14 ktm450 xcf. I know it's not the same, but when I was researching wiring diagrams they appeared to be wired the same from the relay.

I wonder it its the pulsing nature of the new tenders/chargers. A guy should put an osiloscope on one and see what the output looks like. I will try it but my charger is an extreme and the only EFI bike I have is an SMS630. Cam.

That's why I wonder if it's the nature of the one type of battery tender in how it pulses or at a certain amperage output that causes it. I don't think the keyed bikes have the same problem. This is the first electric start bike I've owned that didn't have a key, so I'm kinda new to how the relay gets the signal to close. I thought that it was odd that the trigger wire for the pump relay is always hot and the ground causes it to latch in. Seems to be common among most e-start bikes without a keyed switch.

I just installed a bettery tender junior on 2014 FE501 and it was constantly cycling the pump and the speedo on. I disconnected so I could come up stairs to search the net and see what is going on.

Good thing we have this site!

After reading this and talking to Halls it seems the smaller charger gets rid of the problem but I have not tried it yet.
