  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Hello,
Quick question, going to purchase a set of Avon Distanzia's and am wondering about the size. I have a stock 09 Husqvarna SM510R and am looking at the 120/70/17 and the 160/60/17. These will fit, right? Basically wondering about the rear mostly.
Thank you!

Been research all morning and here is what I found.

Seems like the 160 won't fit the stock 4.25 inch rim that well. Some people have done this and don't experience any rubbing however, manufacturers do not recommend this fitment. As well, most people comment that the 160 will fit but, will have a smaller contact patch than the 150 because the tire is folded more to fit onto the rim.

The reason I wanted the 160 is apparently it is the "SM" spec compound. This means that the tire is built for lower speeds, lighter bikes (aka sumo's vs sport tourers etc). However, more research has shown that the 150/60/17 is "SM" spec as well!

http://www.avonmoto.com/products/adventure-sport/distanzia - notice the "SM" spec here.

Eventually, I'd like to get a 160 tire but sounds like you have to increase rim size (4.5' -5'), then modify parts (chain guard etc) to ensure it fits and that the 160 tire will not rub. This is not something I'd like to do currently since I'd rather ride then work on it right now. But, eventually it sounds like the best bet to ensure more tire options.

Anyways, I think I answered my own questions, feel free to still post comments though.

I have the 150 SM compound on my sumo wheel set for my 630. One thing to be aware of is that a 160/60 has a larger rolling diameter and height than the 150/60 and will impact handling/geometry characteristics. Besides the great pavement handling of this tire I was very surprised and impressed how well it worked in hard pack dirt.

I have the Contiforce SMs on a set of stock Husqvarna 630SM wheels (F3.5"/R4.25"). The front is a 120, rear is a 150. These tires work amazingly well on pavement. They are a purpose built SM tire that is lighter than conventional MC tires. I haven't had them off road, and I doubt that they would work as well as the Avons. If you're primarily interested in pavement I don't think you'll find a better tire for an SM them the Contis.

The Contiattack SM's are better (IMO) than the Contiforce SM, well worth spending a bit of time to find them if you can.

I currently run the Contiforce SM's but, was looking for Distanzia's since it's winter here and thought I could use a more suited rain / winter tire. Once the summer starts again, I'll make sure to look for the ContiAttacks.

The attack SM's have very few grooves, so not the best in wet conditions. In saying that, they gripped better when it was slightly damp than the original Diablo's that came on my 511 did at any time, now those tyres are rubbish.
