Auto Freewheels

Some questions:
430/500 freewheels have the same dimensions that 420/390/360 but have different
part lists numbers.
Up the new freewheels with more theeth.(430/500)
Under the old freewheel with less theeth.(360/390/420)
Am I wrong ?


The freewheels have gmn parts numbers:
FE 478 Z
FE 458 Z
FE 438 Z
Z is for the spring. But GMN sells also Freewheels FE 478 ( without Z) which
seems to stand more torque. Has somebody tried them ?

This is one part I will need to replace on my 390AMX, so I will be watching with interest.
If the 430/500 part is of the same dimensions as the earlier ones, maybe it is just that Husqvarna realised more "dog bones" were better. So, it is possible that the later part would be a good retro fit.

The one in the kickstarter on my 420 would slip,no kickstart= boat anchor.It got replaced but the bearing was insainly expensive,something like $450oz when the exchange rate was 80c oz to the us dollar.I talked them down to $280oz but still expensive.That was the older OZ importer,good bloke.Try that now and I dont like your chances.

On 420 for starting you must have this freewheel on the crankshaft.

Yes, more dog bones can stand more torque.
But I would like to know if someone has tried the FE 400 models without "Z"
which can supply more torque. Are these models goods for HVA auto clutchs ?

I have always seen "Z" freewheels on all auto bikes.
Could it works with without Z models ?

I haven’t tried the free wheels without the spring, I guess you could use them as it is captured inside the hub, but the spring looks to me to be there to keep the dogbones in contact with the shaft and also if the shaft is out of round the spring adjusts the dogbones to overcome the out of round.

I just received a full set of freewheels for my '86 430AE restoration from GMN, (freewheels only no bearings) for $635CDN. They are identical to my 25 year old ones. When I ordered them I considered the higher torque model, but at that price I didn't want to take the risk that they wouldn't work, and/or damage the raceways.
I am very interested to see if anyone steps up and tries the higher torque units, and if so -will they last longer. Seems the cages wear and bend from the rocking action and that is the only reason they need replacing. They need a different cage design, maybe that is what the other model offers.

$635 CDN = 500 € for a full set ( 2 big and 3 middle freewheels).
It is cheaper than the price I get in France ( 200 € for a big freewheel).
Did you buy them from a GMN dealer in Canada or directly from GMN in Germany ?

One thing that confused me is that Fabrice told me that he found freewheels ( FE without Z)
on his 430 AE motor. And he thinks it is a first mount.

That was the price for the full set ( 2 big and 3 small freewheels). There was 13% HST sales tax on top of that.
They had to be ordered through a Canadian dealer and took 8 weeks to arrive.

I need the generic part numbers to the bearings near the freewheel for buying.
Needle bearing Husqvarna P/N : 16 12 579-01, 16 12 581-01 & 16 12 583-01?

Dag EdlundRingspann was the company name at the time. The military bike use a different type that is too weak for the 420. By the way, you can double the lifetime of the Ringspann by twisting them on the spring so the worn surface that was interacting with the crankshaft gets to be at the outside.
