can someone tell me torque for the head nuts on a aircooled 500 ?

looked through the manuals but dont think anything in there covers air cooled 500

and any other procedures eg retourquing after a ride

    cheers

No need to re torque in my experience. Just make sure you lap the head nicely to the barrel.

I torque anyway because of the base gasket after a few runs may compress a tad. It does on the newer bikes too. My 98wr husqvarna sucked in the base gasket when she was brand new. Besides me hearing it and catching it right away what saved the engine was the maximal super M two stroke oil I was using. The tech at the husky dealer asked me what brand of two stroke oil was I using. I told him and he said the engine inside had a good coat of oil on everything. I use super m on the chrome/ impregnated cylinders.

i also retorque, but after a couple of heat cycles to be sure you own it

Even the brand new bikes need a retorque.

on another note . whats everyone got to say about ring gap . have a new ring but the gap looks too small to me . its a 3rd party ring so i believe it will need gapping

most 2 stroke rings have a semi circle to engage a pin in the piston for positioning
take this into account if you file the end

Max ring end gap is 0.8mm per tec section for all 82/83/84 huskies, so obviously something less than that for a fresh build. Assuming your piston has a pin like 2Premo mentioned, your ring should be notched like the ring below and your gap probably should be something like 0.3mm image.jpg

old ring was at over .9 mm gap . rude
new ring was .4 mm gap . based on 4 thou per inch of bore the minimum gas should be .33 mill . so in it went
