    Hi.
I acquired a 1987 WR400 recently and as this is the first time owning a vintage Husky I need to learn lots!

Can you guys tell me what options are available for a replacement exhaust (chamber)? Mine has had repairs to the first 3 bends and is bent and will not line up with the cylinder spigot. Do any other model 400's interchange? Does anyone make replacement header sections or whole new pipes? Before I invest time/money into trying to salvage this one I would like to find out if there are options.

    Cheers
    Adam

87-88 400 and 430 pipes swap...or you can buy a dynoport. nice pipe, available black or ceramic coated.

    Thanks justintendo.

Is that a Dynoport chamber in the pic? I assume it fits up to the standard mounts on the frame etc. with no clearance issues? Certainly looks good.

    Cheers

I wonder if a YZ490 or similar replacement header section would be compatible? They are available from Musket in NZ I believe.

Generally the pipe is mostly on the opposite side from the chain. A kx500 pro circuit pipe can be made to fit if every splice is cut and then re assembled differently. Need to kind of customize near the silencer mount. Another thing is these bikes the front wheel is closer to the exhaust spigot than most anything else so that area needs shortened. An Italian Husky 250 pipe seems to be the exception with the kick starter, shock resevoir, chain and pipe/silencewr all on the same side.

There may be other choices now besides the dyno port, I have one pipe I think was a husky accessory one similar to ktm hard parts of today. Husky products? that one does not have the seams that stick out if you understand my wording. Not sure if 85-86 is swap able with 87-88. An auto pipe probably is a bit different than a standard shift one might check the part numbers.

all 400 and 430 pipes can be swapped, the 85-86 had a different mount at the top, they are 90 degrees rotated, you can cut them off and reeled then or use the 85-86 mounts
the only other commercial supplier currently other than DynoPort and this is when he gets started again is George at UpTite, and if you look around they can be found in peoples garages in used form to get you by till you find a new one you like, third choice is to get one made

I have both a Dynoport knock off and an Up Tite chambers for my 86 400WR. I could be convinced to part with the Dynoport knockoff. It does look very 'works' ish. PM me if interested

Thanks for the information guys thats awesome!.

I had seen an '86 400 pipe with the different mount orientation and wondered if it would be able to be made fit - if it is just the mount then that is an easy fix! Gives me more options when looking.

I got a reply from DynoPort and he has sent a pic and to me it looks like the pipe is fairly different in shape where it goes behind the radiator - does anyone have a pic with onr mounted on the bike?

At very least I only need to replace the header section so wondering if the KX500 pipe could donate just that???

    Thanks again for your knowledge!

    Cheers Adam

Adam, I cant help think a donor header section could be made to work, I agree with Fran that there are likely no "off the shelf" solutions, but imagine the pipe below, cut the first bend just after the spring loops, rotate 180 and weld back together, it looks very close but you'd need to measure first.
The first three bends are all that would be needed.
I'm not sure if the KX Pipe is similar or not but I think we are on the same page.

Seems most modern "big bore" two stroke motorcycles have a portion of the pipe that bends back before crossing over and getting biggest. That is why I chose that kx500 pipe. More length. Note the yellow shading is what I took off soon after exiting engine and put in later where colored.

These pipes can be worked on but do make one appreciate the air cooled bend or a modern 125 bend.

You asked the options:) note how my shape is different than other pictures here. modifiedhqexpchbr.jpg
