87/88 250 are different than previous years yes ..we have talked about the difference a ton here. do some reading! of course there are users here with knowledge of the difference. we just had 3 long build threads concerning this stroker 250. i have also owned and ridden one since the late 90s.
they have longer stroke, smaller bore...similar to a modern 250, they are undersquare. much better bottom end and mid at a small cost of top end compared to previous years. only the cr had the powervalve and they are pretty rare.
the parts in the craigslist ad look like junk..rusted and the "good" top end he has look to have a ton of blowby below the ring.

the 1st picture is an 85 250 bottom
the 87-88 250 is a very torquey engine, most everything about the crank, cases and top end is unique to it, gears etc. same, main shaft and clutch are later design 6 spring type pressure plate
don't cobble one unless you have resources and patience for the parts
back to your first question yes the piston is unique to 87-88 WR,XC 250

The 87-88 connecting rod looks more I beam shaped as opposed to popsickle stick like in the pictures linked in post 1. There are also some notches of sorts, 4 per side at the wristpin hole in the rod. Those pictures do not even have the extra bolt hole for the clutch cover. I do not see where the pictures are linked to an 87, the seller also states 85 parts.

Why is 87 getting called a one year only. They "dumped" 1988 models around here. Well at least sold for steep discounts. I think the same thing may have been sold somewhere in the world as 89.

87-88 cases have no plate that come off near the sprocket, no sneaking out that bearing or tampering with the "seal" without splitting.

I checked the tech specs, the '87 250 is,

    Stroke 70.8mm
    Bore std, 66.50mm
    1st over, 66.75mm
    2nd over, 67.00mm

I was just wondering about this one being rare and different. The bore and stroke is almos square.

I just picked up two cr 250's ones a complete '83 with the cr cylinder. For the cost of a cylinder only. That's my 83 250cr milk truck build.

great job checking out those specs. its no closer to square than the earlier 250 bikes right?

someone please delete this pointless thread.
