Will an all steel clutch basket from an 87 bike (not sure of model) fit an 83 cr250? I would like to have the extra weight for vinduro use.

It would be asking a lot to try and get that to work without having a donor engine.
Feel free to correct me if wrong
need input shaft to go with clutch, would have to match first gear in trans you have
need clutch cover bigger for that clutch
need external starter parts as they change due to larger diameter portion of clutch
    cover
perhaps need could be replaced by custom modification in some of above.

I think some earlier (?85,86?) clutches though smaller have the steel basket and would work so long as the primary reduction matched

I also think (pretty confident on this one) those steel basket clutches would call for a change in the intermediate and kick start gear to match what is on the back of the clutch for starting.

Thanks frank. I was hoping for a simple switch. I will stick with my alloy one then.

The 87 clutch basket is wider in the starter gear section. It's held in place by a hex nut.
It can be made thinner so the snap ring form the earlier engine works. But I'm not sure about the middle clutch release rods length. Like said about there is primary gear and kick starter gear issues.

I probably have the primary and starter gears but won't mess about for the sake of it. Thanks guys. Might still go for it just for the clutch plates though.

I think there's one on eBay for a 87 500cr. It was fitted to an 82 already.

It's the one I am looking at. I only read the modified part a few moments ago.

I see 402 on the part. That should be for a 250 (1987). Have them count the teeth. Study the parts sheet.

Stupid me I bid on that one but someone else bid after me. I forgot I just purchased a complete 87 430cr liquid bottom end. Old age and brain fade maybe? I know the rear swing arm bolt is bigger so I need sleeves for the case.

You need the correct primary gear for the crankshaft. Isn't the 87 430cr a five speed tranny like one of the first ones? I believe the difference between the latter five speed cr and the six speed wr is they remove the first gear from the wr and it becomes a five speed. I think the ratios are close.

    a CR430 is a 5 speed
i dont recall any difference in the swingarm pivot bolt size

you mean to put the 87 engine in an 82 frame, the pivot bolt difference?

The swing arm pivot bolt diameter is larger in the single shock swing arms. I changed the sleeves once already to run a newer case in an older twin shock.

I have a set of 500cr six speed tranny gears. I just need to compare the 430cr to the 500cr primary gear ratios. I don't want to make the cr tranny a wr.

I'm on the fence wether to build a 430cr or 500cr.

the 500 has a different primary ratio in most applications but i think the 87 CR is the same as the 430

funny thing about the clutch a friend asked about putting it in a 1983 CR430 he was informed about the gearing and starting the engine
can't remember the whole conversation but his mechanic recommended against it

The '87 430/500cr has the bigger clutch with the steel basket? Wider clutch cover?

Just double checking so I keep the parts seperate. So I can install all the goodies on my first build of 2015. It's going to be a serious ride.

I have an '82 430wr complete engine. Since this has the older clutch in it should I go with the Barnett clutch springs?

For my build I may go with a complete Barnett clutch with steel plates, discs, springs.

I'm thinking the build will beat on us so the better quality parts are better.

As noted in post 2 the larger clutch came with a larger cover and different kick starter parts. I never did mix and match this stuff but I think the diameter that sticks out is more not wider. I could not find my picture but was able to search my old posts.

This is the 87-88 cover note the rubber stop is held on with a screw. the four stroke kickstarter (with the compression release thing) is the earlier and the one on the splines in the 87-88.

I would use sureflex plates but the newer Barnett seem to look the same from what has been posted on here.
