Hi all, I searched but came up blank, can anyone tell me if there is any difference in the expansion chambers from 1985 to 1988?

I think mostly mounting brackets. I got an extra off eBay a few years ago the was listed for 84 - 87. I compared to the expansion chambers from my 85 400WRX and 86 400WR
I have and all that was different was the mounting bracket. It likely came from a 84 400WR twin shock as it has a different frame from the single shock models

Thanks Jim, I suspected that they were interchangeable, I guess I will take some good photos of mine and compare any I come across.

Excellent, thanks for that. I will try to find a better pipe for mine and that opens up many more possibilities.

This is a long-shot, in the past I have seen expansion chamber header pipe sections for sale to repair beat up or fatigued pipes, has anyone heard of them for vintage bikes or do most people just buy an aftermarket pipe if available?

I think most of us on here are where the 400 liquid cooled was for a few years then the 430. There was a dual shock liquid cooled 400 then a liquid cooled 400 then 430 at least in the approximate time frame you put in the title.
There was also an aftermarket pipe through Husqvarna I believe I have one that didn't have the ridges where the two stamped sections are welded together. The front wheel is kind of close to the exhaust exit compared to brand x. This seems to make that first turn quite abrupt. It is not unusual for the pipe to be smashed against the frame at least the ones used off road around here. I blow them out with carbon dioxide and weld up the cracks as needed on all except one.

They did sound test at that vintage event I entered lately 96 db had a stick looked like 3 feet long to get the right spot for the meter. I failed but they let me ride anyway will need a piece of inner tube if I go next year.

my 430 i recently put together is loud! stock pipe and airbox, stock muffler with factory sparky. its all sealed up well and freshly repacked. just has a somewhat nasty bark. my full dynoport sparky system on my 95 360 is quite a bit quieter, especially if i dont let the airbox howl or open the powervalve. i mean my 430 is loud just starting up.

That is true regarding the year range in the heading Fran, I meant to reference single shock bikes only, being 1985 WRX400 through 1988 WR400, so I didn't bother including the 430's, perhaps I should have since it is my understanding is that the 430 is the same cylinder with a larger bore.
I think the one thing that can really let a bike down both in appearance and (most importantly) in performance, is the expansion chamber.

Yeah, I think I could live with that! That's a nice pipe, i wonder what shipping would cost to the other side of the planet?

From the 1988 parts sheet it looks like your 88 400 shares the part number for the pipe with the 88 430wr. The 88cr 430 is another number and both eu and us auto bikes is still another. The 1986 sheet shows the 400 eu and us having different part numbers which are not the same as any 1988 choices. It probably takes a bit of research to figure out what is on the auto bikes for 1986.

Of course a powervalve makes things a lot quieter when it is closed down, the pressure when the port opens is less due to the piston traveling farther down the stroke.

I see that the XC has a different part number, is the XC pipe different mounting points or is it different internally, as in shape for tuning? I may be able to pick up a XC pipe but I'm not 100% certain that it will fit.

I have emailed Rich from DynoPort to enquire about postage and if XC pipes will work on WR's.
