83 250wr

Hey all, I'm looking to get a little more low end from my bike. The top end is fresh so that part is in good shape. Would reeds help out? What are available for this bike?

what is your gearing? will need 13-54 or so to have a good bottom in the woods...these motors are bit soft on bottom, with my 84 i try to ride fast and use the weaker bottom as "traction control"

Just to give you a reference I have a 13/53 on my 79 250 wr and it has great bottom hit but that's it. I bet it won't even do 45 mph .
I can not keep it like this either so I will be changing it soon. Barley can use first gear, and second will raise the front end with just a lil blip of the throttle. If your gonna be in the woods all day it might be ok but its not really a good all around gearing .

I drop the front sprocket to a 12 tooth on my '83/250's.

it wont go over 45? surely not because its revved out in 6th?? do you have all 6 gears? has to be something else wrong there. maybe someone messed around with internal gearing.
my 84 250 will blow past 65 in 6th 13-54....cant remember what gearing i had on my 79 250, but i never came close to topping that thing out..i know it always had a 12 counter, maybe 52,53 in the back.

You do know there's "SIX" speeds? Sixth gear wot she should be flying milk truck style. You should have a green blurr on both sides of the trail.

So it's got a 12/54 sprocket set. it just seems soft on the lower rpm range. My 76 cr250 is much better on the lower rpm range.

the 83 was weak in the lower end with a brief mid range spurt before a gap then another short top end burst. I believe there a some porting specs for this engine that move it toward the cr style with a stronger more sustained burst. otherwise you can try a tight repack of the muffler and check the jetting is spot on.

boyeson reeds can help as well. but the grinding tool is the real key

Is the air filter clean?

The '82-'83 250 is a mid-top engine, it will never have anything near the low end of your '76 250

.

Didn't some use a 12-56 sprockets? That gave more bottom in first gear.
Need to dial in the sprocket ratio for your style of riding and the terrain. With a smaller front sprocket and a larger rear sprocket you'll be up in second to forth gear more. Possibly in fifth gear too.

Changing the gearing will help some, but he will never get the low end of the non-primary kick 250s, the new cylinder in '82+ was aimed at mid-top at the expense of low end.

They were focusing on desert racing in the southwest.

The smaller the front sprocket the more the chain wears because of the tighter wrap. Better to use a 12t and go larger on the rear.

I think that 12/56 was the hot ticket in the 83/250wr I rode the gas pipeline in mass and climbed the hills and went thru the valleys no problem with my 300lb body. They have some wicked hills there.

I rode this bike for awhile today. No bottom end at all. Kind of tough riding hills. I'm going to go up a little on the pilot jet and see if it's any better. A couple times it sounded a little lean. This is the worst bike I've ridden as far as low end power. I have a 81 cr250 that I may stick in this frame. I'm really disappointed with this bike.

I rode one before buying my 84.5 watercooler back in the day. I struggled for a while then just got on it a bit more. then the magnets flew out of the flywheel and i had to stop. fortunately the water bottle was a much better engine. I now have a 400...bottom end IS NOT AND AN ISSUE

I went thru the carb this morning and I went a little richer on the pilot. The needle is all the way down. I'll see if I can get a test ride in today and see if it helped. I'm sure the bike wasn't this bad when new.
