Just picked up another Husky. Frame is XN18171 without rear hoop or lower case saver bar. Has outboard mounted shocks and long gold forks. I am confused as this number tells me it is a 430XC but I thought XC has WR type frame. If I build bike with 1980 390OR engine would it look correct as a 390CR bike? Is the steering neck same rake ect as 1980?
    Thanks

Someone probably cut the rear loop off or it snapped when it was wheelied over backwards. Same with the lower loop.

Look of OR & CR with CR tank is the same look with this frame

All models '81-'83 with 40mm forks had the same long lower fork legs, the WR just had shorter damper rods, the short lower leg did not come out until the '84 WR models. The XC should have the frame loop and case bar but as said above, many times they are cut off, I have a WR with the center bar cut out so a flat skid plate will fit. The steering geometry is the same '79-'83 and your frame as is will look like a CR except for the non-floating rear brake which is a minor detail.

1982 Frame Rear Motor Mount needs a 82-88 Motor to bolt up. Up to 81 the rear motor mounts were 2 bolts. 82 + used the swing arm bolt.

The new primary kick engine ('82-up 250, '81-up 430) has the swing arm bolt through the cases but the '82 frame is unchanged, all you have to do to mount a 390 in an '82-'84 frame is use the same rear mount bracket used in '79-'80, as Husky did with the 420s.

I looked carefully at rear of the frame and the rear frame is legit along with there was never a bar underneath. Nothing cut or ground. I am thinking CR and XC used same frame? Anyway as long as geometry is the same I am going to build a 1980 390OR with 80 CR tank and 40mm forks. How long were the 82XC shocks. This has 17" no name shocks now. Now I need someone who is familiar with replacing the threaded nipple for the petcock on an alloy tank.

No, they did not use the same frame, same geometry but not the same frame, the XC used the same frame as the WR and the XC's ALL came with the case bar and rear frame loop, no exceptions. Look at the rear brake pedal, the CR had a different pedal and pivot than the XC and WR because it used a floating rear brake and the XC/WR used a non-floating brake. The CR has a long brake stay arm that mounts to the frame, the XC/WR use a short stay arm that mounts to the swing arm.

CR frame is not the same as XC/WR. No lower sump rail evidence just means it was removed by a surgeon rather than the typical butchers we often see the handy work of!

Here is the deal. I slapped this together to see what I had in parts and if it would run. It RUNS!!! Nasty Nasty engine. It wanted to wheelie with hard tire and cold asphalt. This bike will not be realistic for woods racing in New England. Long and aggressive. It needs open space.
Now. I cannot start this thing kicking it. Not turning fast enough. Starts with jump. It has a 390 auto kick lever which is different. I am only 150lbs and I am thinking of fabricating the longest lever possible and looking into decompression. Where can i get decompression setup?
    Thanks

In this forum. You can even use a chainsaw compression release. But make sure you get a one direction valve as you do not want want to suck debris into your cylinder on the downstroke of the piston

Does anyone know the length of 82 wr shocks? Does anyone know if the later 82up coarse spline kick shaft will fit 80 clutch cover. I think the later kick lever would work for starting the 390.
    Thanks

16.5 inches for us over on this side of the mighty pond!!

You may also want to look for a set of WR damping rods for the forks because when you drop the rear with shorter shocks, the steering will get worse, not better unless you shorten the forks and drop the tubes into the triple clamps

I was going to just try raising the forks. Would look odd with soo much fork up but should still work right? These are longer than my other wr forks but internally should be the same?

John do you know if I can use the kickstart mechanism and lever from an 83/84 bigbore. Possibly the whole clutch cover and all? I have the old style straight short kick with fine spline. The later ones look better and I would get a better kick also.
    Thanks
