  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

73 450 WR-Silencer/Muffler options

I'm at the stage in my restoration when I need to find a silencer/muffler for my stock, 450 pipe.
I would go the Pickle silencer route, but they are @$200 bucks. I'm not crazy about the looks of
the pickle anyhow. This is a rider, and not a living room art project, so factory correct is not a real
issue. I have several Skyway mufflers, but they would need to be modified to work. The intake is
to small. Is there a any other units that would work on this bike (1 1/2 OD on the stock pipe) and
look sort of vintage? Any Asian units that might work, that I can get on Ebay, used?
Thanks

Just get an exhaust shop to make one from some 3" tube. Get a laser cutter to shape a couple of end caps and then get some preforated tube and weld it to the end cap. make this so it slips over the main tube and you have a simple repackable muffler.

You will need a good exhaust man to make the pipe to muffler connection but if you have some old mufflers, he should be able to graft one on ok.

Shouldnt cost any more than 30 bucks in bits and a couple hours of exhaust man time. They usually get excited about doing some custom work and with a bit of creativity, get a bit of shape to the end caps etc if you want it to look a little less squared off. Im just doing one for my 400. It has the california muffler (1 piece) so i cut it at the pipe join (left 1/2" to weld a joining slip over strip) and i will make an end cap to go over the other end with as long a piece of pref tube as i can find. the longer the muffler the quieter it is but also the better for low end power. This motor will be a torque monster.

Hi Suprize. Thanks for the reply. Great idea for the muffler. I think I will modify one of my Skyways to fit.
Thank you.

Now thats what I'm talking about...that reply & members like Alvin is what makes this site great!

Thanks guys. I sent the silencer which needed a little cosmetic work to Jack free with no shipping charge because I have had it since new and knew he would make good use of it and I will know it will be appriciated and help another one of these old bikes be original again.

Hi Alvin;
Thank you again for the pickle silencer. It took awhile , but it is on, and it looks great. I have been remodeling my work shed, and my 450 is stuffed in a corner, under everything. I am about 3/4 of the way through, so it won't be long now, and I can uncover the 450, and get some photos of the bike. It's a nice bike, and I think I did a pretty good job, but the pickle silencer is THE bright spot on the whole bike. I'm so glad I could put a original silencer on my bike. It makes this restoration so much closer to the way she looked in 1973. Mike328 is right, This is a great site and forum because of members like Alvin, who want to help other members. He knows that when he helps out, it will lead to another Husky getting back on the dirt, and promote the Husky brand that we all love. Thanks Alvin.

Thanks Jack,
I do have an orignal pipe also that I would be glad to pass on to you or someone who needs it to bring another one of these old beauties back to life. Glad I could help. Send pictures when you get the shop ready.
Alvin

Thanks Ron, the feeling you get from giving is way worth more than $100 bucks or so. The more I go to the Vintage races the more I wish people would revive their dust collectors in the garage.

Actually I am thinking of going totally modern leaning toward a 'newer' model...maybe a '74

Hi all, this thread is really old. I am currently getting a 1972 450 WR ready to ride this spring. My silencer was missing when I bought the bike, so I'm hunting for options to get it ready for the woods (we have some restrictions on needing a spark arrestor). This thread is exactly what I need, as I might be interested in having someone build the muffler if that is an option. This is the original exhaust which is in really good shape. I any one has any more details on how to build one, or leads on the original muffler, please let me know. I'm currently working on the swing arm and am getting close to putting it all back together. (I was told I might need to work on the clutch).

Thanks,
Terry

Any good exhaust joint should be able to "make one up" if you cant track down a good original. you will need the spark arrester I guess if your in sunny California climes. they should be obtainable from someone here...

Let me know what you find....I need one for my 72 450CR and am having no luck! (It came with a nice Skyway unit, but somewhere along the way someone removed the spark arrestor screen) Got to have it here in Calif!!

any help/info would be appreciated!

Walt
