  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2013 TXC310 - Strange Issue when trickle charging

Hi. First post. It's getting cold in Idaho so I hooked up my Battery Tender to my new TXC310. When I do so, it makes a clicking noise and both LED's on the bike start flashing. I only let it do this for a few seconds before disconnecting it. I'm using the factory installed pigtail and verified it was wired correctly to the battery. I don't understand what could be causing this.

Any ideas? Thanks.

It's a known issue for a year from a few of us on the TE. Clearly an issue with the '13 and how it's wired so I removed the pigtail from my battery even though it did top off the battery and stop clicking at that point. I assume the relays are sensing the changes in voltage and causing the switching on/off.

So it's a known issue but no solution? So every time I want to charge the battery, I'll have to disconnect the factory harness from the battery? What a pain.

I've had my '13 TE310R on a Battery Tender Jr. and haven't noticed this behaviour. The battery is still connected to the harness.

Maybe this does not affect all '13 TE bikes? Mine was part of the lot that did not require the starter mod, as a point of interest.

Ok, so this is happening to other folks as well. Suppose that is somewhat reassuring. But still no cause or solution....

First post in quoted thread indicates that hooking the Battery Tender to the battery with the aligator clips instead of the factory installed pigtail solved the issue; I don't understand how that can make a difference, but I'll try it when I get home tonight.

I do have mine hooked up with alligator clips. Mine did not come with a factory pigtail, that I'm aware of. I did add the pigtail connection that came with the Batter Tender Jr., but I'm not using it and can't imagine it would make a difference.

I think it's only an issue on some '13 (possibly '14) bikes. I'm guessing it's somehow related to the capacitor system that allows them to run with a dead battery.

Does it continue to happen even with the Earthx battery?

Sounds like the battery saver relay is clicking when the charger goes into "float" mode which pulses power on and off to keep the battery at it's maximum. On the EarthX battery, once you have reached this clicking, stop charging the battery, as no more is necessary and it will hold it's charge for months and months with no help.

I would remove the battery (lead acid or other) from the bike or unscrew the wiring and then charge for now, or risk toasting something. My bike was flooded after the clicking w/the earth x (the earth x clicks much faster than the Yuasa did) for a couple of minutes. The clicking is same as occurs when the electrics shut down seconds after shutting the engine down.

I think it is always a good idea to disconnect a battery from the vehicle when charging. All you will probably lose is the clock time but you eliminate many potential problems. Besides if you have to charge your battery frequently I.e. every few months than you have a leakage problem or a bad battery.

I use a battery tender have for years on my cruisers quads and bikes , I got the ones that are green and it says battery tender in yellow , works great , I just hook the quick connect wires to the terminals and when I am done playing its easy to just hook up quick don t have to remove the seat or anything, just leave it until you play again keeps battery perfectly charged, never had a toy not start or have a weak battery.

FWIW, I use the Schumacher 1.5amp charger. It gets used on all the bikes in the shop, never had clicky issue as of yet. Sells for $19.95 at Walmart, cheap, durable and comes with quick disconnect for easy access without removing the seat.

I've used my Battery Tender for years to keep batteries in about 6 vehicles 'topped-off,' especially during the cold winter months. I don't think there is any question that this is a good practice and will prolong battery life.

BACK TO THE ISSUE - as described above, there is an issue with some years/models when hooked up to a trickle charger that causes a relay to click. The 2 LEDS on my model also begin flashing. Mine is a 2013 TXC310R, bone stock.

I've called the dealer I purchased the bike from a couple months ago, and although they are not aware of the problem, the service guy does have a call into our local Husky Rep. I can only assume that Husky will be made aware of the issue and hopefully a solution will be figured out.

I will definitely post an update, if that happens. In the mean time, I'll disconnect the battery from the factory harness before charging.

I will be interested to hear what Husky says about it as I like to keep my bikes on a tender when not being ridden.
In the meantime, I replace the stock battery with a WPS Featherweight Lithium Battery and dropped several lbs off my ride. They are very reasonable, I paid $94 out the door at my local bike shop. Spins my 310 better than the stock battery and can sit for several weeks and not lose a charge like a lead-acid battery does.

I found a little humor in that actually. What normally happens is we discuss it here, the customer calls the dealer, the dealer calls Husky, Husky calls Ty@ziptyracing, and then Ty asks me if I have ever heard of the issue? I will look further into the issue. :D
