  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2011 TE449 Valve check/adjustment tips?

Hi again guys, you've done great on my other questions, thanks!
Are there any vids or detailed instructions on valve checking and adjustments for the 2011 TE449?
Thanks,
Mark

Work shop manual is good ! If you have worked on four strokes before you should have no problems at all lads. If not grab a cluey mate and get him to watch over your shoulder, thats how i learn't...Shims are no worse than any other bike mx/enduro four stroke, just a different size and configueration as stated previously to the mainstrean jap four strokes, why I don't know, but they are. It would be good to purchase a set to suit all the 450's and a set for the 250's to suite all the brands, but that would be way to easy hey guys.!!

I got the valve cover off my 511 (what a huge PIA that was), took one look at the valve setup (what I could see of it) and promptly put the valve cover back on. There is no way I am attempting that job. I don't even recognize some of the stuff under the valve cover and what with the frame rails right above the camshafts, I can just imagine it will be a massive PIA to get shims in and out.

I have a couple of friends who are professional motorcycle mechanics who I will happily pay to do the job just to make sure it is done correctly.

I have a 07 TE450 and check/adjust my valve clearances easily, a mate has a TE511 and has asked me to check his, is the procedure the same? are the shims the same as the ones i use in my 450?
cheers guys.

paul.

No, they are different. The intake valve shims are hemispherical. I just did my 600 mile valve check and my intake clearance is .23 and .25 mm. That is way out of spec. I called the local shop and they said I might be checking it wrong since the exhaust have the flat pancake shims and they are spot on. I am taking it in to get them checked/adjusted. They are only charging me $120 for it. IMO it's worth it for peace of mind, especially since mine is still under warranty.

Hey guys,

Another question in context of valve adjustment:
Is it possible to remove/insert the spark plug recess (the aluminium-made tube which surrounds upper spark plug area) without loosening the camshaft clamp?
It seems too tight with the frame above - is there any trick?
If not, it would be impossible to reach every bolt with the torque wrench.
