2004 TE250 top end

Hi all, My sons 04 TE250 smokes a bit (light grey smoke) on start up. It goes away after a minute and runs strong. I have been told a new top end may be in the cards. Does this sound right for a good running bike that doesn't make any strange noises? If it's a top end rebuild has anyone that's done this have a ballpark cost?

I'd get it compression(easy) and leak down tested and then you can know for sure if it needs anything.

The 250 huskys were prone to a little smoke on start up but it wasn't a big deal. I know george at uptite could tell you the reason why.

Mine is at the dealer for a top end. It was hard to start for a few days, and then lost power when hot. I found more and more oil in the coolant, and greyish smoke with a sweet smell... No strange noise.
