Just purchaced a 1987 wr 250 for a restoration project-not running. Just wondering if anyone has any insights, likes, dislikes, or tips for this particular model ? I'm in the process of stripping it down now-it's pretty roughf. I'm sure I'll have specific questions soon! Great links for parts in the beginning of the vintage section-Thanks.

    Water pump leak

    1st things 1st welcome!

Ok, a lot of the 85 & up waterpumper models had problems
with the cases rotting, due to someone not using antifreeze.

Water causes rust, so look to see if there any white crud down
near the water pump housing. Even if there's not, i'd pull the
pump & look in there. I'd also pull the cylinder & look in past the
crank to see what the bottom of the inside case looks like. Water leaks
or lays in there from sitting and you've got a major project

I've personal seen 4 motors turned to just to junk  because of this.
Basically ruined the cases & the crank - with white powdery crud.

Don't panic , my 86 400WR was fine, but that's the 1st thing to check on any water cooled Husky.

    Have fun

    No White Crud

Pulled the motor tonight. I pulled the jug off and inspected the crank and the pump-no white crud , but the long bolts holding the jug on were rusty/cruddy. A good sign was when I pulled the rads there was antifreeze in there. A previous owner had cased it and it didn't have a skid plate=a very small hole that I have to weld right where the cases meet. The other thing I found was that the swingarm shaft that goes through the case was broken. I must have scraped a pound and a half of crud grease off with a putty knife before I could see anything . Just the beginning and I have the pics to post this weekend!!

    looking good so far

That's good news, antifreeze is a good thing, though not if you spill it.

    Keep us posted.

Make sure the water pump seal area is not eroded away. The 87 are bit high strung, but a good bike.
