• Husqvarna Motorcycles Made In Sweden - About 1988 and older

  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

I recently acquired a 1985 500 Automatic. Does anybody have a link to download the shop manual for the engine on this bike? Thanks.

The engine is pretty much the same as the water cooled 430 ones. The drive stub is a little longer and has an oil passage instead of turning the water pump, the crank cavity is larger and the primary side cover is a little thicker but the insides seem the same to me. I have the automatic supplement that came with an 1986 430 auto but it isn't really a shop manual. It isn't in computer friendly form either. It could be copied and mailed if you don't get closer to what you seek.

Thanks for the info.
I've been reading about the correct automatic oil to use. It seems like the Ohlins shock oil is the most readily available. Any recommendations on the correct weight Ohlins shock oil to use? 5 weight? I have absolutely no experience with these transmissions and trying to take it slow to avoid a costly mistake. Thanks.

If you go to section 5 page 17 the drawing at the top shows the springs and center of the 500 auto. The picture at the bottom shows the springs and center of the 430 auto. It looks like there are holes for the earlier springs in my judgement.

Thanks Michael, in a way I was happier with the automatic bikes until I found this site and read some of the service bulletins. It seems you are supposed to change all the one way clutches every 600 miles according to one of them.

Yes, thanks for the link to that service manual. I found the reference to the Univis J-26 oil in there and have been calling local suppliers to try and find it. The bike also has a round style taillight on the rear fender and the bulb is missing. Any ideas on what bulb# that taillight might be?

I live only a couple towns north of Cheshire and I was pondering over looking at the bike. Glad someone on here ended up with it.

The bike runs and drives great. The plastics are a little beat up and the kick starter slips, but it was a fair deal in my book. It has a very good home now and will be fully restored eventually.

So I can't seem to find the Univis J26 or Univis HVI 26 oil for the auto tranny. This oil supposedly crosses to a Shell oil called Tellus S2 V32 which is readily available. Anybody else try this alternate oil or know of a local supplier in the northeast who can get the Univis 26? I know that I can use the Ohlins shock oil, but would prefer more of a bulk supply (5 gallons).

Thanks for all the information. I searched for hours and couldn't find anybody online to buy the oil from. Thanks for the link.

I'm glad you appreciated my post as most see the price and complain.

As an exercise, let's do the math on the 5 gallon pail. The 5 gallon pail is just shy of 19 liters of fluid. If the 500AE is like the 420AE it will take 1 liter per change. Figure the cost of the pail plus the crazy shipping costs these days and the pail will be close to $200 now. That works out to $10.52 per liter for the Univis 26. Oh, I forgot to address the Ohlins shock oil....now that's expensive! Close to $30 a liter. As a comp, I just went to the Autozone website and they have Mobil 1 Synthetic motor oil for $8.99/qt (not that you'd be putting engine oil in a trans). The way I justified buying a pial of Univis HVI 26 was by knowing that Husky automatic transmission parts are very hard to find now as you can't just go to the dealer for them. Plus I wanted the bike to work properly in all conditions. For me it was worth it but everybody has a different viewppoint and I respect that.

Hopefully you'll get your 500AE back on the trails soon and get to enjoy the experience!

Just for a comparison perhaps in the mid nineties when they obseleted the husky transmission fluid in the quart plastic bottles it cost about $8.50 if I recall. A 5 gallon pail from an exxon distributor cost about $50 and they just got in with a bunch of other stuff and there was no charge for shipping. I recently got a quote of $172 and $50 shipping from a bearing outlet which had pails of exxon or mobil stuff on the wall. The link you got above should give you enough of a product id to see what a local distributor would charge.

I am pretty sure the 420 holds more when filled to the little plug on the side than the 430. Yes the 500 has a slightly larger cover on the left so it will hold a bit more than that.

And how many first gear clutch kits do you think correspond to one pail? I think I got about 6 enduros in the c class perhaps houring out some of the time on a clutch kit in the 430. I hear A riders needed a new kit each time but none of them entered them any more by the time I got mine.

One more amusing thing is that I bought a quart or perhaps a liter bottle With the husky stuff on the side. It definately says univis J26 on the card which came with the bike for all the specifications which normally are in the owners manual for brand x. The genuine exxon univis doesn't smell the same as the genuine husky fluid. At least my bottle and my pail. Apparently now it is branded Mobil.
