  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

1980-85 brake, swingarm & wheel mounting parts

Ok, this thread is going to be quite involved, i've been working on my 510 project & thought i'd
share some things i've found.

We've all bought too many parts off Ebay/craigslist & from people who thought they knew what they have, only to find they don't fit your bike. I've read plenty of threads about people looking for WR or CR brake peices & get stuff the doesn't work.

So i thought i show some brake, swingarm & wheel spacers for 1980-85 Husky twin shockers, and what you should need for your WR, XC & CR models.

As you can see i've been stock piling spare parts for a while not sure what was what, & what model it's used for.

I'll start with brake parts.

Husky John

Ok,
I'll start with the stock CR brake components, here's a 1980's CR brake plate. Note how the plate can get damaged with
something as simple as an incorrect spacer. Husky T already had a great thread on these spacers & close up pics of
them with dims.

I've included pictures showing the stock CR brake pedal, note it seems that you need to have a CR frame because it has the mounting tab for brake arm which mounts to the brake plate.

WR & XC brake parts are the same, and as luck would have it, on the pre 1983 bikes, brake plates front & rear are the same except
for the brake arms. The 1983 -85 front brakes where upgraded to dual link brakes, but the rear brake look the same til 1985 when
they changed again in design. Here's some pictures of the 80-82 Front & 80-84 rear brake plates.

Also the WR & XC stock brake pedals differ from the CR ones as well. There's a special center mounting spacer/nut & round
spring. I'll post pictures of the spring, brake link arm & brake cable in a couple of days.

Ok , here's pictures of the CR brake plate mounted on a 1981 CR swingarm with a 17" rear wheel, it's shown in it's approximate mounting position. Not shown is the lower brake arm which mounts to the frame tab right behind the right foot peg.

I've also included pics of the 1985 CR brake plate, that looks like it would mount the same as the early ones, shown mounted to a white 1983 swingarm using the same 17" rear wheel.

Here's some pics of a 1982 XC showing it's rear wheel & brake mounting. The XC & WR brake arm both mount to the swingarm unlike the CR
which mounts to the frame tab behind the right foot peg. Note the brake pedals used on the WR & XC models, differs from the CR. I didn't
take pics of when i mount the XC brake plate to my 81 & 83 swingarms, but i did take some of the difference in the axles & wheel spacers.
You need the correct spacers for which ever brake plate your using. But also note how with an additional spacer the you could use the
WR/XC axle with a CR brake plate.

You are wise to qualify the statment with "but the rear brake look the same til 1985 " I once bougt the bronze bushing (83 xc rear) which goes in where the brake cam turns and thought I could just grab another brake cam from a similar looking plate and found it too short. The way the hub and plate fit together changes at some point probably 85 but the water cooled 400 dual shock one has the profile of the mono shock plate/hub from what parts I have in my pile.

I posted to this thread a couple of pictures and text which might actually be more applicable to this thread that that one.

Fran,
Yes, i have a few brake plate assemblies, that i've got over the years, and were told they were for such & such bike
and they weren't. I'm just pleasantly surprised that it seems that you can mix & match more Husky parts then i at 1st thought.

My guideline was always usually you can go 1 year in front & 1 year behind from what every year Husky your working
on & have most parts fit.

I'm going to continue this thread by posting what i've found out about mix/matching swingarms soon.

Husky John

Now up is too looking at swingarms, which ones work with which models.

As i showed before the WR/XC brake arm bolt directly to a bracket welded directly
on the swingarm. So if the swingarm has this bracket, then it's a WR/XC one.

The CR's brake arm bolts directly to a tab on the frame, so this bracket is not needed
and not present.

Something i noticed comparing 1980 - 84 swingarms is that there width where they mounts in the frame, are all the same.
Like wise the back of the swingarms are all 8" wide, no made whether it's XC,WR or CR. Also when i compare the
shock distance dims from the pivot bolt, to the bottom of the shock bolt (11.5") on my 83 250XC & my 84 500CR there
the same as well, as is the distance from the pivot bolt to the end of the swingarm (22.5"). So this confirms that the
at least for the 83 to 84 bikes the XC & CR have identical swingarms & shock lengths.

Here's a very trick 1980 aftermarket Aluminum swingarm, i'm thinking of using on my 510 project if possible.

I did find the 84 250WR swingarm I have is 1" shorter than the CR/XC swingarm but the distance between pivot and lower shock mounts are identical.

Also the width that mounts at the pivot is smaller on the 78 WR swingarm I have but the rear width looks to be 8" . The rear width is smaller on the 75GP swingarm I have on my ML frame

highdez1981430cr,
Not sure what brand the Aluminum swingarm is, it has gold anodize on the some surfaces near the
pivot bolt area, but there No markings i can find.

i hope some one can assist me with my rear brake plate because im sure im missing something here maybe a spacer ? please help SAM_1068.JPG SAM_1068.JPG SAM_1069.JPG

Yes your brake hub should look like this one. According to the 85 part manual the center bearing is p/n 73 82 296-19 & it looks
like your missing a distance spacer (item #29) p/n 15 15 523-01. Double check yourself by going here & searching there online
parts manuals

Hope this Helps
